چکیده

The Proceedings reports the results of a workshop focusing on the topic of bark beetle genetics. The workshop evolved because of the growing interest in this relatively unexplored area of bark beetle research. Workshop participants submitted brief descriptions of their views of the current status of bark beetle genetic research and needs for the future. Contributions vary from broad overviews to detailed descriptions of specific projects. A common theme is the potential for rapid advances in this area of research given recent technological advances in the field of genetics. Also included is an extensive reference list. Dedication We dedicate this report to the memory of Gerald Lanier, a valued colleague to all who share an interest in bark beetle research, and a dear friend of many of the workshop participants. It is particularly fitting that we pay tribute to Gerry for his pioneering efforts in bark beetle genetics and in recognition of his lasting contributions in the area of scolytid systematics. Acknowledgments: We thank Sue Moore for handling the innumerable workshop arrangements and mailings, and for assembling the draft report. We are also grateful to David Wood and the School of Forestry, University of California, Berkeley, for accommodating the Workshop on Day 1 and to Garland Mason and the Pacific Southwest Research Station for accommodations on Day 2. We extend special thanks to Maureen Stanton for providing the "outsider's" point of view and invaluable insight during the course of the Workshop.

Spatial-Temporal Modeling of Forest Gaps Generated by Colonization from Below- and Above-ground Bark Beetle Species

Studies of forest declines are important, because they both reduce timber production and affect successional trajectories of landscapes and ecosystems. Of particular interest is the decline of red pines which is characterized by expanding areas of dead and chlorotic trees in plantations throughout the Great Lakes Region. Here we examine the impact of two bark beetle groups, namely red turpentin...

Effects of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) restoration treatments on the distribution of bark beetle attacks

Whitebark pine is an important component of high elevation ecosystems in the western United States and Canada. Many wildlife species, including grizzly and black bears, squirrels, and birds, forage on the large, wingless seed. Whitebark pine relies heavily upon the Clark's nutcracker for seed dispersal and regeneration. Due to fire exclusion, white pine blister rust, and the mountain pine beetl...

Landsat Imagery Spectral Trajectories - Important Variables for Spatially Predicting the Risks of Bark Beetle Disturbance

Tree mortality caused by bark beetle infestation has significant effects on the ecology and value of both natural and commercial forests. Therefore, prediction of bark beetle infestations is critical in forest management. Existing predictive models, however, rarely consider the influence of long-term stressors on forest susceptibility to bark beetle infestation. In this study we introduce pre-d...

LINKED DISTURBANCE INTERACTIONS IN SOUTH-CENTRAL ALASKA: IMPLICATIONS FOR ECOSYSTEMS AND PEOPLE By

Communities and ecosystems in the Alaskan boreal forest are undergoing substantial change. People contribute to this change. They are also impacted by the consequences. For example, wildfire and spruce bark beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) outbreaks have increased in frequency and severity due to warming trends, affecting the ecosystem and services important to people. I conducted a study to ex...

Large carbon release legacy from bark beetle outbreaks across Western United States.

Warmer conditions over the past two decades have contributed to rapid expansion of bark beetle outbreaks killing millions of trees over a large fraction of western United States (US) forests. These outbreaks reduce plant productivity by killing trees and transfer carbon from live to dead pools where carbon is slowly emitted to the atmosphere via heterotrophic respiration which subsequently feed...
